Recruiting Candidates with Multiple Job Offers
By Mark Spear
Director of Recruiting

In today's job market, the top talent often is considering multiple job offers.  The best way to handle this is to be prepared to make an offer to the right candidate ASAP.  If possible, have all the necessary paperwork completed and approved by upper management beforehand so you can hire the right person on the spot.

However, there are other things to consider to make sure your company lands the candidates it wants:

Make every effort to be on time.  Conduct an organized interview; give timely feedback, timely second interviews and timely offers.

  1. Remember to sell the opportunity and the company.  The candidate is looking for reasons to work for your company.  This sell could be the reason a candidate
    accepts your opportunity versus another.
  2. Determine the right questions to ask.  Too many times when there are multiple
interviewers, not everyone is looking for the qualities or skill sets
that the actual hiring manager is looking for.  Therefore, not everyone is
asking the right questions and candidates get ruled out or in for the wrong
reasons.  Be sure everyone is on the same page.
  3. If you have concerns about the candidate's skills, ask about them.  Give the
job applicant a chance to provide you with information that might give you details
about their skills you may have missed and could make that candidate your #1 choice.  If you have concerns about a certain area of their experience or management
abilities, get it clarified while the person is in front of you.
  4. Candidates come prepared to ask questions about engagement length, type of
technologies in the group, chance of extension, company growth, job
stability, salary reviews, lay offs, personal growth, opportunities to work
with other departments, technology and plans to stay up to date, etc.  Be
    prepared to answer these questions.
  5. Have all parties involved in the hiring decision on the interview schedule the same day.  This will enable you to make a decision without delays.  Any delay could have the candidate getting an offer from another company.
  6. Be honest with candidates.  It is OK to be neutral, however don't tell applicants you are going to bring them back for a second interview (or make them an offer) then don't.  If you are not sure, be neutral.
  7. Put your best offer on the table, these candidates have multiple
opportunities.  Sometimes they may look at an offer at face value and go
with another one that was more competitive when in fact you could have
    offered more.

Congratulations. You've landed the best talent.  Now you need to focus on what you can do to fit the new person into your team and help the new employee achieve his/her career goals.  Look for discussion of those topics in upcoming issues of "The Insider."

Steven Raab Finalist for Tech Titans Award

Steven Raab, CEO of The InSource Group, is one of four finalists for the Tech Titans Community Hero Award sponsored by the Metroplex Technology Business Council (MTBC), an honor given to recognize an individual within the technology industry for outstanding achievements in community involvement.

Steven's commitment to the greater Dallas community has been long and deep throughout his business career ranging from Christmas gift giving through the March of Dimes and Toys for Tots, to leadership roles in Dallas Social Venture Partners (DVSP), involvement with the Transition Resource Action Center, as well as other organizations.

His community participation includes:

Dallas Social Venture Partners is an organization whose members give their time, expertise and financial support to Dallas non-profit agencies that focus on education and children at risk. He has been co-lead partner with several investees (non-profit agencies) and is currently co-lead with one investee now.  A lead partner is the primary communications link between an investee and DSVP and is responsible for making sure that DSVP knows how to help the agency, bringing the necessary resources to bear to assist it.  Steven is past chairman of DSVP and is currently chair of the Strategic Planning Committee.  He has recently been nominated to serve on the board of Social Venture Partners International, the parent organization of DSVP.  (See related story in this issue about The InSource Group's pilot program with DSVP.)

  • Mothers Against Teen Violence - board member and former chairman of the board
  • Transition Resource Action Center, an organization focused on providing resources for children no longer eligible for foster care services once they reach 18 years of age
  • Co-lead partner on Vision Regeneration, an organization that focuses on reducing teen and gang violence.
  • The Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture - member of the board of directors and chair of the board's marketing and branding committee
  • Society of International Business Fellows -an organization that helps its members advance global understanding and the competitiveness of its members through access to unique resources, educational experiences and relationships.  Steven recently served two weeks in Turkey participating in a leadership training program involving young leaders from nine Caucasus and Central Eurasian countries.

Over the years, Steven has been instrumental in providing executive and financial leadership to non-profit organizations in the Dallas area, as well as helping increase executive involvement.  The winner of the MTBC's Community Hero Award will be announced at the annual Tech Titans awards dinner on September 29.

InSource Pilot Program Helping Those That Help Others

Dallas Social Venture Partners (DSVP) is a new breed of philanthropic organization that is innovating in the way that it helps non-profit groups serving those in need.  And The InSource Group is being just as innovative with a pilot program that helps DSVP.

For the past year, The Insource Group has been working with DSVP to provide the employees of that non-profit and two affiliated organizations with benefits, as well as handle payroll services.

"The primary advantages are that the three organizations receive payroll services without paying fees and their employees receive benefits that they wouldn't otherwise have access to," said Steven Raab, CEO of The InSource Group.  Although they work for small non-profits, the employees have access to big company benefits.

In addition to DSVP, the Entrepreneurs Foundation of North Texas and the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship are part of the program.  In essence, The InSource Group acts as the co-employer for the employees of the three non-profits.

DSVP advocates "engaged philanthropy," which encourages a personal and active role with community agencies as partner's time permits.  DSVP "partners" contribute $5,000 annually, 85% of which is distributed to "investees," the non-profit groups serving those in need.  The model is similar to venture capital in the business world.  DSVP assistance is focused on general operating support, allowing investees to concentrate on fulfilling their community missions.  DSVP partners also provide human and intellectual capital to help investees improve overall operations and long-term sustainability.

Raab became involved with DSVP not long after it was formed in 2000.  The more he learned, the more he was convinced that this was the outlet he was seeking for serving the community.  His commitment grew as he joined the board and then served as chairman of the board in 2006.  (See related story about Raab being nominated for the Tech Titans Community Hero Award.)
