TAKING STOCK OF YOUR IT RESOURCES - Jim Thompson

ASSESSING LONG-TERM AND SHORT-TERM EMPLOYEE STRATEGIES
BY JIM THOMPSON
CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER
Findings in a recent survey conducted by The InSource Group of more than 3,300 decision-makers in the IT space indicate a significant increase in the hiring of IT resources in 2007. The survey also reveals that companies plan to hire more full-time IT employees than contract.

What are the drivers that result in a propensity for either full-time or contract resources? Many cite budget as the largest single factor driving hiring decisions. The irony is that companies citing budget concerns as the main consideration in hiring strategy arrive at significantly different solutions. Some companies said they avoid contract employees because of their high hourly rates, while others avoid too many full-time employees because of the high cost of benefits and perceive contract employees to be more cost effective. How can you sift through seemingly opposing perspectives to determine the best course?

Accepting certain variables, there are some basic yet essential facts that should be considered before determining whether to fill your increased head count with full-time or contract staff and before solidifying short- and long-term commitments to resources. This article discusses these fundamentals and takes a look at specific situations in which contract employees make sense, as well as positions in which full-time employees are effective.

INSIDE KNOWLEDGE
BY MARK SPEAR
DIRECTOR OF RECRUITING

The competition for recruiting talented IT specialists can be fierce, with the top candidates frequently receiving multiple job offers. However, there are several actions a hiring manager can take to increase the likelihood of attracting the right candidate for the job. Consider these factors (and remember that money is not always on the top of the list).

OPPORTUNITY
You want the applicant to be excited about the position and opportunity to work for your company. Will the candidate believe he or she will be enthusiastic about going to work everyday?

TECHNOLOGY
Obviously, the candidate must be knowledgeable about your relevant technology, but does he or she have a passion for it? Demonstrate that your company is the place for their knowledge and passion to grow professionally. Highlight additional skills the person will learn in the position.

PROFESSIONAL GROWTH
Ask about the candidates career goals and then explain how the position will help the candidate achieve their goals.

SALARY
Will the candidate be properly compensated for the position compared to others within the same company or market as a whole? If so, make that apparent. Let the candidate also know about bonus opportunities if they exist.

BENEFITS
Health care is the start, but there's more to a competitive benefits package.
Vacation - How generous is the vacation offering? Candidates want flexibility with their time off and they will not want to lose their existing level of vacation time. So if they receive more than two weeks, be prepared to match it or offer more vacation time.
401 K - Make sure to explain the 401(K) program and the company match.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
Gas prices are high and freeways are clogged. Commuting can take up a large amount of a persons time. Remember that all things being equal, the candidate will choose a new place of employment closest to home. If possible, explore having the candidate work from home or having flexible starting and ending times.

In this competitive environment, it is not enough to just have a position available. The hiring manager must make a focused effort to attract the best IT talent. Use this list to formulate a recruiting process and job package that will be irresistible to the best candidates. Or call The InSource Group to help.
